GMSA has added a 2,2-litre 16-valve and an automatic version to extend the local lineup of Opel’s flagship MPV range to three models – the 1,8 16V Elegance, 2,2 16V Elegance and the 2,2 16V Elegance automatic.GMSA has added a 2,2-litre 16-valve and an automatic version to extend the local lineup of Opel’s flagship MPV range to three models – the 1,8 16V Elegance, 2,2 16V Elegance and the 2,2 16V Elegance automatic.

The new models in the lineup can be differentiated from earlier versions by subtle cosmetic changes – the addition of a new chrome grille with a centre slat and revised rear light clusters. Sixteen-inch alloy rims, a full size spare wheel and roof rails finished in black are standard on all models.

But it’s the 2,2-litre four-cylinder Ecotec 16-valve engine that will dramatically transform the Zafira’s on-road character. The 2,2 GSi’s Z22SE powerplant, which develops 108 kW at 5 800 r/min and 203 N.m of torque at 4 000 r/min, has been transplanted into the Zafira. The flagship version of the range is fitted with a multi-mode four-speed automatic transmission, which should in theory combine well with the torquey nature of the engine.

Air conditioning with individual controls, cruise control, electric windows front and rear, electro-hydraulic power steering, remote central locking, trip computer and a transponder key immobiliser system linked to an ultrasonic alarm, front-loading CD player/radio, map reading lights for front and rear passengers and a load compartment cover are standard.

In terms of safety, the Zafiras come equipped with ABS with EBD, airbags for the driver and front passenger, three-point seat belts (including pre-tensioners) for all seven seats. Opel’s pedal release system disengages the foot pedals in the event of a severe impact to reduce the risk of injury to the driver’s feet.

Included in the price of the Opel Zafira is the five-year/100 000 km “Opel Complete Motoring Plan”. This plan includes all normal-servicing costs “plus the cost of replacing fair wear and tear items such as clutch, brakes, and shock absorbers,” the company said.
