Peugeot’s dramatic new coupè has just been launched on the international market. This fluid feline shows that the French company is serious about reinventing itself and that it is willing to take some risks to do so.
Having a slight resemblance to Audi’s TT, the RCZ features aluminium side-rails, a “double-bubble” roof and rear screen and dramatic rear haunches. These new flowing lines and fresh design was styled by a German, Boris Reinmöller, and is built in Graz, Austria by Peugeot partner Magna.
There are three models available in Europe – the RCZ 156, RCZ 163, and the RCZ 200. South Africa will see the RCZ 156 and RCZ 200 in September this year.
The RCZ 156 is powered by a 1,6-litre petrol engine that delivers a maximum power output of 115 kW at 6 000 r/min and has a torque figure of 240 N/m that is available from 1 400 r/min. With either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission sending drive to the wheels, this vehicle can reach 100 km/h from standstill in 8,0 seconds, and has a claimed top speed of 217 km/h.
A more powerful 1,6-litre engine lies under the bonnet of the RCZ 200. This unit has 147 kW at 5 500 r/min and 275 N.m at 1 700. It is mated with a six-speed manual transmission and had a zero to 100 km/h sprint time of 7,5 seconds. Top speed is claimed to be 237 km/h.
