The last category of the competition is particularly difficult to call, because these workhorses cannot be judged on exactly the same criteria as the passenger cars, sports cars or even the MPVs. The evergreen “biltong bakkie”, the Toyota Hilux, remains the favourite in a category that has not seen major changes in the last year. The Hilux’s new three-litre diesel engine has proved itself a success, the Isuzu KB and Corsa utility had some cosmetic changes and the Colt range has welcomed the ClubCab to its ranks.
Will the product DaimlerChrysler markets as a “cab-and-a-half” have enough influence to reclaim the title for Colt in this section? If one counts the Lexus brand with Toyota, the Japanese manufacturer has dominated seven of the 11 categories voted in thus far.
Can Toyota make it eight out of 12 and dominate three quarters of all the sections in our Top 12 competition… or will Isuzu, Colt or perhaps even the Ranger or Hardbody but a stop to Toyota’s run?
