Volkswagen has lifted the wraps from what is bound to be an eagerly-anticipated addition to the classy new Polo lineup – the new Polo GTI.
Looking very much like a miniature Golf 6 GTI, the Polo GTI features a 1,4-litre TSI twin-charged powerplant that has been breathed on to endow the little hot hatch with a 0-100 km/h time of 6,9 seconds on the way to a top speed of around 230 km/h.
Mated with the company’s 7-speed DSG transmission sending drive to the front wheels, the 1,4-litre TSI engine develops around 134 kW at 6 200 r/min and 250 N.m of torque at a low 2 000 r/min.
This punchy power delivery is down to the use of a compact supercharger unit from idle speeds to 3 000 r/min with a turbocharger joining the fray as revs and speeds increase. An electronic cross-axle traction control system mounted in the front differential helps to rein in the power.
The Polo GTI sits 15 mm lower than its standard-spec brethren and rolls on a set of 17-inch alloy wheels in a similar two-tone design to those of the Golf GTI. Its bodykit further enforces the Golf 6 GTI-‘lite’ impression with mild revisions to the front bumper and rear valance, while the interior also receives such GTI staples as the flat-bottomed steering wheel, gearshift paddles and sports seats with the traditional tartan inlays.
