Just two months after the unveiling of the all-new Porsche 911 Coupé, the Stuttgart-based company has lifted the wraps off the new 911 Cabriolet in Carrera and Carrera S guises.
Porsche tried to replicate the exterior design of the Coupé unto the Cabriolet, especially when the roof is closed. To help keep the weight down, Porsche has used materials such as magnesium in the construction of the hood mechanism.
As was also the case with the Coupé model, the Cabriolet models – although bigger in size – are lighter than their predecessors.
Powering the two Cabriolets are the same engines that you will find in the back of the Coupés. This means the Carrera Cabriolet is powered by the 3,4-litre flat-six engine that develops 257 kW and is connected to a seven-speed PDK or manual transmission. The Carrera S features the more powerful 3,8-litre flat-six engine that develops 294 kW and also offers a seven-speed manual or PDK transmission. Porsche South Africa is likely to offer the PDK transmission as the standard option, with the manual transmission as a no cost option.
Opt for the PDK gearbox, and Porsche claims a combined fuel consumption, for both cars, of below 10 litres per 100 km.
These models will be launched in Germany on 3 March 2012, while a spokesperson for Porsche South Africa confirmed that the first cars will arrive in South Africa around two months later.
The Carrera Cabriolet will set you back R1 109 000 while the Carrera S will cost R1 259 000.
