As part of the VW group Porsche is swiftly becoming apt to plug pretty much every niche in the current automotive landscape, so it comes as little surprise that the German performance car maker is looking to add a five-door, coupé-flavoured spinoff from it’s highly successful Cayenne SUV range.
An unnamed source at Porsche in Germany has hinted that the company has been seriously mulling a coupé variant of the Cayenne, but the concept was stymied by the success of the standard Cayenne and the capacity it soaks up at the firm’s Leipzig plant, not to mention concerns that the newcomer could dilute the brand’s ethos and threaten such models as the more traditional 911 and Cayman/Boxster.
But with the warm reception that met the BMW X6 and the buzz around other such models as the upcoming Mercedes-Benz MLC, it appears that the Cayenne-flavoured liftback coupé is in an advanced phase of development.
Aesthetically, the Porsche Cayenne Coupé will likely take the form of a hybridisation of the Cayenne and Panamera, with more taut sheetmetal than the SUV and hopefully a more fetching rear than the sedan.
Should the project get the green light it’s expected to coincide with the third-generation Cayenne, which has been given a tentative 2018 release date, and will share much of its underpinnings. The Porsche Cayenne Coupé will likely carry a number of the engines destined for its SUV sibling – six-cylinder petrol and petrol/diesel hybrid among the number.
