It’s been 50 years since the iconic 911, initially wearing the 901 moniker, first emerged and now Porsche will celebrate this milestone with the Frankfurt Motor Show unveiling of the Porsche 911 50 Years Edition.
This model is based on the 911 Carrera S, but wears a wider body with rear wheelarches extended by 44 mm and ushers in two model-unique colours; a dark Graphite Grey and a light Geyser Grey metallic, as pictured here.
Other exterior features include chrome garnish on the engine louvres front, wheel air inlets and trim strip bridging the brakelamps. There are also “911 50” decals adorning the engine cover lid and doorsill kick plates, but the most prominent feature has to be the 20-inch Fuchs-style alloy wheels. High-gloss window finishers and sport design wing mirrors round off the package.
The interior gets a smattering of “911 50” decals; most notably on the dials, which are tinted green in a nod to the original car, and the headrests of the sports seats, which are finished with tartan panels reminiscent of the first car’s pews. The standard sports seats feature 14-way electrical adjustment, while 18-way-adjustable items seats are offered as an optional extra. There’s also brushed aluminium trim adorning the facia, which features an individually stamped numbered panel, and gear selector.
Power is provided by a 3,8-litre flat-six boxer engine developing 294 kW and 440 N.m. Coupled with the PDK transmission, this unit will reportedly propel the car from zero to 100 km/h in 4,3 seconds on the way to a 297 km/h top speed. The manual equivalent completes the same sprint in 4,5 seconds and hits a top whack of 299 km/h.
Among the technical highlights are Porsche Dynamic Light System; a cornering function for the standard Bi-Xenon headlamps and a specially programmed Porsche Stability Management system that compensates for the car’s wider rear track.
Just 1 963 examples (echoing the original car’s 1963 launch year) will be built with an as-yet unconfirmed number reaching our shores early next year.
