The new body will be wider than the current 996 and the basic 3,6-litre model will have the same 235 kW output as the current model. There will, however, also be an S version with capacity stretched to 3,8 litres and power up to 250.
The standard transmission will be an all-new sequential manual set-up. Further upgrades would probably include revised seats and instrumentation. And unlike most new-generation models, this 911 is expected to be noisier than the outgoing model, as owners have apparently complained that the car was sounding docile and over-refined.
More than 10 variants of the 911 are said to be scheduled, starting with the six-cylinder Carrera Coupé later in 2004. New models will be rolled out at six-month intervals with a four-wheel drive Carrera on the cards too.
While the 911’s styling may still be considered tame, there are rumours of more interesting models coming out of Leipzig. According to there may also be a two-door coupé, with a throaty V8, to rival the BMW M3.
