As part of its latest limited-edition model blitz Porsche has unveiled the Boxster S Black Edition. As the name suggests, this model sees the extensive use of black both inside and out, while the specification level also gets a shot in the arm.
Just 987 units will be offered – a nod to the model’s internal platform code – and will feature a number of exterior and interior styling revisions in – you guessed it – black. In addition to the paintwork, the side intakes, twin exhaust tips and decals on the engine lid are also finished in black, while the folding top has “Black Edition” embossed into the canvas. The eagle-eyed amongst you will have spotted the special ten-spoke design 19-inch alloy wheels lifted from the Boxster Spyder – those too, have been painted black…
Among the interior elements finished in black are the roll-over bars, cabin trim strips, gear lever and instrument dials. The seats are partially leather-trimmed items with a Porsche crest embossed on the headrest. Other Black Edition touches include a plaque on the glovebox with the car’s production number and stainless steel sill plates with “Black Edition” branding.
The Boxster S Black Edition also ushers in a trio of optional specification packages in “Comfort”, “Infotainment” and “Design” guises. The list of features these within these packages is sizeable and includes; cruise control, climate control, Porsche Communication Management (PCM ) with sat-nav and mobine phone integration, uprated sound system, LED daytime running lights, wind deflector and bi-xenon headlamps with dynamic cornering lights. In terms of optional extras, the Boxster S Black Edition can be had with ceramic composite brakes, active suspension (PASM) and full-leather adaptive sports seats with memory function.
Porsche has managed to squeeze an additional 7 kW from the Boxster’s 3,4-litre engine, bringing the Black Edition’s power output up to 235 kW. Torque output has also jumped up by 10 N.m to 370 N.m. Mated with a six-speed manual gearbox, this unit will propel the Black Edition from 0-100 km/h in 5,2 seconds (0,1 seconds faster than the S) and on to a top speed of 276 km/h.
A spokesperson for Porsche South Africa confirmed that this model will be available locally. The cars will arrive in the second quarter of this year and although prices haven’t been confirmed, expect to pay a premium over the Boxster S’s R660 000 starting price.
