Several “green” stars, including the winner in the best supporting actor category Morgan Freeman, arrived at this year’s Oscar’s in their trendy hybrid cars rather than the traditional limousines.

Environment friendly stars Leonardo Dicaprio, Gwyneth Paltrow, Orlando Bloom, Natalie Portman, Salma Hayek and Scarlett Johansson all stepped onto the red carpet at last night’s ceremony from their fuel-efficient petrol-electric hybrids. The US environmental group, Global Green, also noted that last year’s best actress winner, Charlize Theron, also chose to arrive at the glittering event in a hybrid-powered chariot.

“With global warming threatening us all, driving a fuel efficient car like a hybrid is something that everybody can do to protect our planet,” said Hayek, who joined the growing list of Hollywood stars who parked their limousines for the evening.

Bloom added: “People can choose to change the way they drive to help reduce our impact on the environment.”

Other stars who have in the past chosen the smaller petrol-electric hatchbacks at the Academy Awards include Harrison Ford, Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon. Ford, Dicaprio, and numerous other stars, including Cameron Diaz, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks and Brad Pitt, are all proud Prius owners.

The Toyota Prius was recently made available in this country and is marvelled as being the most eco-frindly mass-produced car yet. Linked to a selling price of R269 900, the Prius is offered here on a rental basis with a full maintenance plan over a four-year period.
