Ford recently unveiled its EcoSport crossover in China, and it’s due in South Africa in the first half of 2013.
Ford unveiled the concept version earlier this year at the New Delhi Auto show and, judging by the images, the production version keeps much of the concept’s look with the large trapezoidal grille, narrow wrap-around headlamps, bulky stance and sleek overall appearance.
Ford’s all-new EcoBoost engine will be utilised in the EcoSport. This turbocharged 1,0-litre, three-cylinder unit with direct injection and variable camshaft timing produces in the region of 90 kW and 170 N.m of torque – from as low down as 1 700 r/min all the way up to 4 500 r/min. CO2 emissions is said to be lower than 140 g/km. There are other powertrain options to choose from as well.
Much like many of the Ford models of late, the EcoSport will be packed with the latest technologies from the Blue Oval including Ford Sync driver connect system with voice control. Keyless entry and remote start-up are available on some models. Safety features include dual front and curtain airbags, as well as ABS and ESP.
The EcoSport will be produced in Chongqing in China, Camaçari in Brazil, Rayong in Thailand, and Chennai in India, and will be offered in nearly 100 markets globally.
“The all-new EcoSport is designed and engineered specifically for customers in global growth markets using Ford’s global SUV engineering expertise and reflecting our commitments for quality, leading fuel economy, safety and smart technology,” said Raj Nair, group vice president, Global Product Development. “We’re delivering innovative products like this to drive our global growth.”
