The latest available vehicle export statistics for August reflected a substantial improvement over previous months even though figures for the same time last year show a different picture.
Total vehicle exports during the month totalled 14 947 units. This reflected an increase of 6 248 vehicles, or 71,8 per cent, over the July 2004 figures.
However, on a year-to-date basis, this year’s exports appear to be lagging at 74 760 units compared with the 84 066 units across the same period (January to August) in 2003.
Between January and August 2003, 75 647 passenger cars (of the total 114 909 units), 8 096 (of 11 283) LCVs and 323 (of 469) medium and heavy commercial vehicles were shipped.
This is compared with the 68 025 passenger cars, 6 464 light commercial and 271 medium and heavy commercial vehicles exported up until August 2004.
In all, 126 661 vehicles were exported by the end of 2003.
VWSA’s export programme has been especially successful with the manufacturer producing close to 9 000 units for export since May this year. More than 9 000 Polo units have already been produced for export this year and both models are primarily exported to countries in the Asia Pacific region.
