DaimlerChrysler is recalling all Chrysler PT Cruisers built in 2001 and 2002 because of a possible fuel pump leak. South Africa is affected as well.
More than 460 000 units are affected worldwide. DaimlerChrysler SA said approximately 1 300 units in South Africa would be affected. The manufacturer said it would install a secondary seal at the top of the fuel pump module.
The local manufacturer said a fuel leak was detected during an inspection after a United States government crash test. “There are no know incidents or complaints related to this issue, and Chrysler is taking this precautionary measure to further reduce the possibility of a fuel leak in the case of a severe collision,” it stated.
A quarter of the 464 315 vehicles will be recalled for a separate problem with the fuel supply line, which may rub against the air-conditioning service port.
But Chrysler added that no South African vehicles would be affected by the additional action to recall a smaller number of PT Cruisers to fit an additional clip to an under bonnet fuel supply line. This modification is only required on left-hand drive vehicles.
SA owners will be contacted, and if they have any questions they can contact DaimlerChrysler’s Customer Response Centre at 0800 133 355.
