Given the size of Nissan’s stand in Hall 6 of the Expo Centre, the Rosslyn-based company’s presentation was short but sweet, with good news for those awaiting news of the Qashqai’s arrival in South Africa.
Nissan certainly had virtually its entire range of passenger vehicle products at the stand; including the Micra, Tiida, Murano SUV, Navara and 350Z. Replicas of the Japanese marque’s Production Car Racing 350Z and Off-road Championship Hardbody also managed to draw admiring glances from the gathered Press corps.
The star of the stand was the Qashqai crossover vehicle, which made its début on African soil. An audible exhalation from the crowd accompanied the announcement that the newcomer will be making its way into the South African market in the second half of 2007.
And, given the location of the show in what some consider the hi-jacking capital of the country, it came as a pleasant surprise to hear that Nissan now marks all of its locally-marketed products with the Microdot security system, which entails the spraying of about 10 000 microscopic-dot tags, which contain essential information such as VIN numbers, on various parts of a vehicle’s bodywork and components.
