Motorcycle and quad bikes showed an increase of 0,6 per cent in sales in January compared with the same period last year. Quads sales in particular showed good growth.
Total sales of 1 501 were recorded in January, up from 1 492 in the same period last year.
The two-wheel market showed a decrease of 11,2 per cent over last year, with total sales of 971 units in 2003 compared with 1093.
Quad sales increased from 399 to 530 in the recreational segment. This increase was due exclusively to growth in the recreation class, with a 10 per cent decrease in “utility”.
In the 500cc+ MC category, trail bikes made up 52,8 per cent of the total volume sold in respect of the top 10 positions, and in the top 10 overall, quads sold 46,5 per cent of the top 10 volume.
According to Arnold Olivier, national director of the Association of Motorcycle Importers and Distributors (Amid), the increase is promising considering that January 2002 was a very good month as it saw a lot of pre-price increase buying, which was not the case for 2003.
With interest rates still high, though, the industry is cautiously optimistic and at this stage forecasts a market for 2003 of 15 500 units, which is on par with the total market for 2002 of 15 707.
