VWSA has launched the purpose-built sporty Golf GTI R in celebration of Golf's 25 years on the South African market.

The Golf GTI R is powered by the 132 kW turbocharged 1,8-litre engine that was introduced earlier this year and made the current GTI the fastest yet. With 235 N.m of torque, the GTI completes 0-100 km/h in 7,8 seconds and reaches a healthy top speed of 228 km/h.

The standard GTI remains in production and is complemented by the GTI R's sports package, which will be offered on 150 units only.

Following the prototype by Volkswagen Racing, the R features racing-type front and rear bumpers, side skirts and a rear spoiler. The GTI R will also include 17-inch alloy wheels and a sports muffler with a silver sports tail pipe as standard.

Features such as the centre console and interior door handles have been finished in brushed aluminium. Satellite navigation is not offered as an option because of the brushed aluminium option on the radio/air conditioning controls facia.

The footrest and pedal cover kit, gear knob, steering wheel and front carpets have the Volkswagen Racing "R" inscription and the GTI R is being offered in a choice of three racy colours, black, silver or red.

Price is R251 640, with Volkswagen's three-year/120 000km warranty and five-year/60 000 AutoMotion maintenance and service plan.
