Public enterprises minister Jeff Radebe will replace transport minister Dullah Omar, who will step down while undergoing treatment for cancer.

Omar was diagnosed with Hodgkins-Classic, a form of cancer of the lymph nodes, in mid-January.

Chief government spokesperson Joel Netshitenzhe said an eight months course of treatment had been prescribed.

“Over this period, he must receive therapy for one week in each month,” he said. Omar will rest between treatments.

“The President has appointed the minister of public enterprise, Jeff Radebe, to stand in as acting minister of transport,” Netshitenzhe said.

President Thabo Mbeki is expected to meet Omar soon to discuss the portfolio. Omar’s illness is likely to result in a cabinet shuffle.
