Thousands of excited fans lined the Killarney racetrack in Cape Town this past Sunday to catch (what was for many) their very first glimpses of a modern Formula One car. And they were not disappointed. Red Bull test driver Neel Jani gave the crowd plenty to cheer about as he blasted up and down the main straight for several demonstration runs.
In between runs, the Swiss youngster gave it the beans at either end of the straight throwing his 3,0-litre V10 (a 2006-specification) F1 car into a series of smoke-filled doughnuts, much to the delight of the masses in attendance. Many of the assembled crowd didn't expect the sheer volume and verocity of the V10 as it shrieked up and down the straight. For safety reasons Jani did not get to complete lap of the circuit.
Despite a last minute change of venue from Table View's Marine Drive to the racetrack, the demonstation-only event attracted even more spectators than any regular circuit, draft and drift racing events.
In between the shrieking wail of the V10 the crowds were entertained by stunt rider extraodinaire, Brian Kapper pulling off insane wheelies and a popular local drift squad.
