Hot Renault Megane models are held in high regard by CAR staffers. The current generation RS versions are among our favourite hot hatches … and matters look as though they are about to get even better.
The French firm has turned up the wick on its range-topping RS model, which now produces 205 kW coupled with 360 N.m of twist action between 3 000 and 5 000 r/min. The new model is dubbed RS275, named for its power output in horsepower.
Renaultsport enlisted the help of specialist firms such as Akrapovič, the manufacturer of benchmark exhaust systems for motorcycles and performance cars, and suspension experts Ohlins. You can hear the bespoke exhaust system in this video clip.
To channel that power to the ground, the RS275 uses a mechanical limited-slip differential forming part of the six-speed manual transmission. Optional 19-inch black Speedline Turini wheels derived from those used by competition versions of the Mégane can also be ordered. Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres developed especially for this car form the final part of the equation.
Creating an appearance that is unique to this limited-edition model is a new livery that includes Trophy branding on the Platine Grey F1-type front blade, while the personalised body sides feature Trophy decals. Platine Grey has also been selected for the chequered flag graphic at the bottom of the doors. Numbered door sill guards are further evidence of the limited-edition car’s exclusivity.
Inside, Mégane RS275 Trophy comes with leather and alcantara-covered Recaro bucket seats with visible red stitching. The latter has been carried over to the rear bench seat, while the head rests feature Renaultsport badging.
Long time holder of the Nurburgring front-wheel-drive lap-time record, Renault was outdone earlier this year by the latest Seat Leon Cupra. La Regie is keen to regain this title and the RS275 will be the car aiming to do so. Renaultsport will make an announcement about its latest assault at the ‘Ring on 16 June.
Renault has confirmed that the RS275 will come to South Africa.
