According to the chief exterior designer of the swoopy sedan that recently stunned the world, a Hyundai Ioniq 6 wagon isn’t off the cards and this rendering could be an indicative direction for a long roofed derivative.
SangYup Lee, chief designer for Hyundai was asked on whether a liftback was ever considered for the new EV and his response was: “I can make a great hatchback out of that; a shooting brake.” This isn’t concrete confirmation of a Ioniq 6 wagon but it is enough to get our imagination riled up and SRK Designs has put pen to paper (so to speak) with a latest rendering.
With the South Korean brand not adverse to a Ioniq 6 wagon, that could mean a more utilitarian model of the swoopy EV is something that the future may hold. There isn’t much choice in the segment at the moment, essentially dominated by the far more expensive long-roofed Porsche Taycan. This could then be the mainstream electric powered wagon that families can opt for over unecessarily bulbous SUVs.
In addition to this, Lee also hinted that a high performance derivative of the Ioniq 6 could also be a future reality and if that is the case there may even be a wagon version of that too. The current Kia EV6 which shares the same architecture as its Hyundai counterpart makes 430 kW and 740 N.m in its most powerful GT form. It isn’t ludicrous Taycan territory but it will be more than sufficient for the common man and woman.
The Ioniq 6 and all of its details will be divulged at the South Korean Busan Motor Show before going on sale in select markets by the end of this year. Perhaps there may be confirmation on the Ioniq 6 wagon or high performance Ioniq 6 N then.
