Mercedes-Benz has expanded its South African S-Class range with the introduction of the first diesel in the large luxury segment.
Mercedes-Benz has expanded its South African S-Class range with the introduction of the first diesel in the large luxury segment. The S320CDI arrives at a time when low-sulphur diesel has become more readily available in South Africa.
The 3,2-litre six-cylinder direct-injection engine with variable nozzle turbine turbocharger delivers 145 kW at 4 200 r/min and 470 N.m from 1 800 r/min (said to be the highest in its displacement class).
Claimed performance is 0 to 100 km/h in 8,8 seconds and a top speed of 230 km/h. According to the manufacturer, fuel economy is good enough to allow a range of more than 1 000 km on an 88-litre tankful.Worldwide sales of the S-Class range have reached more than 270 000 since its European launch in mid-1998.
In South Africa, it holds a market share of 70 per cent, with sales of 1 700 since launch in mid-1999.

The S320CDI has the same level of standard and optional equipment levels as the S320 petrol model, which includes a number of innovations.
These include the COMAND system, DISTRONIC, Keyless Go, dynamic multi-contour seats, LINGUATRONIC and Xenon headlamps.
The S320CDI will retail at R589 000 (inclusive of VAT).
