A group of six South African women, who call themselves the Savanna Janes, will set off in Land Rover Freelander Td4s en route to Tanzania on Thursday. Their mission – climb the live volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai!
The group consists of Erika Gibson, senior reporter at the daily newspaper Beeld in Pretoria, Jenine Coetzer, a senior reporter at the SABC’s Channel Africa, Susan Puren, a television programme producer, Hanrie Greebe, who is researching the history along the planned route, freelance motoring journalist Elza Thiart and Kitty Thiart, a sports massage therapist.
The two Freelander HSE models will take the six Savanna Janes through Botswana and Zambia to Arusha in Tanzania and back – a journey of almost 10 000 km. The vehicles are fitted with Thule roof boxes and run on 225/55 R17 Michelin 4×4 Synchrone tyres.
Sasol is the fuel sponsor for the expedition and a Garmin GPS has been fitted to one of the Freelanders and a SATTRACK satellite system to other. Readers will be able to follow the group’s progress on the Savanna Jane website and SATTRACK site.
The Savanna Janes plan to be back in South Africa by July 18.
