Volvo has enhanced the safety reputation of its S40 and V40 cars by improving its safety features, design and fuel consumption.
The improvements apply to the whole range, the S40 and V40 2.0, the S40 and V40 2.0T as well as the S40 and V40 T4.
The Volvo inflatable curtain (IC) has been enhanced with the addition of a passenger airbag as standard. Volvo says the IC now deploys faster, the inflatable cells are bigger and deeper and deploy further down for shorter passengers. The IC is now fully inflated in just 30 thousandths of a second.
DSA (Dynamic Stability Assistance) is now also offered as standard on all models.
The three engines across the range remain the same. The S40 and V40 2,0 are powered by the four-cylinder, 16-valve 1 948 cc engine, which delivers 100 kW of power at 5 800 r/min, while offering 190 Nm of torque at 4 000 r/min. The 2,0 litre light pressure turbo engine delivers 120 kW of power at 5 250 r/min and 240 Nm of torque at 1 800 to 4 500 r/min. The flagship T4 models have the 2,0 litre high-pressure turbo engine, which offers 147 kW of power at 5 500 r/min and maximum torque of 300 Nm at 2 500 to 4 000 r/min.
Volvo says it has incorporated optimised software in the engine control units and most of the four-cylinder petrol engines now have lower fuel consumption. According to the manufacturer, the 2,0-litre light pressure turbo engine’s consumption has fallen five per cent to 7,9 litres/100 km.
The vehicles have a new grille, with a black egg crate pattern. The headlamps now have a black surround with rings in front of the reflectors. At the rear, there is a new chrome-plated opener for the luggage compartment.
There are new features on the dashboard: two large, centrally positioned instruments flanked by two smaller dials. These have been designed along the lines of those found in Volvo’s larger cars – the S60, S80 and V70. There is also a new sporty three-spoke steering wheel (same as the one in the Volvo S60).
The seats feature a new backrest design along the same lines as those found in Volvo’s larger models, while the 2,0 and 2,0T models have wood effect inlays on the doors, glovebox lid and gearshift lever knob and Cyborg metal effect inlays on the T4.
For added personal security, the new Volvo S40 and V40 have a key remote control featuring an alarm button that activates the alarm lights and a siren.
