An automotive research company based in the US predicts that the number of navigation systems installed in North America will increase by up to 90 per cent in the next five years.
The company, CSM Worldwide, measured the growth of factory-installed systems, which are more common than after-market systems. Currently, about three per cent of passenger vehicles in the US are equipped with navigation technology.
Despite the enormous growth in satellite navigation systems in North America, Japan still records the highest number of installations per year. Currently 16 per cent of Japanese vehicles have navigation systems installed. It is expected to grow to about 32 per cent by 2010, albeit at a much slower rate, since the market is approaching congestion.
The greatest growth is expected in the European market where it is predicted that the market will grow by 103 per cent by 2010. Navigation systems are now installed in about eight per cent of the cars produced in Europe.
However, the price of the equipment has been falling as manufacturers have started integrating the satellite navigation systems into cars’ audio systems, reducing the need for additional parts.
Quality now is also much improved, the systems are easier to operate and the voice recognition technology is enhanced.
