The Z4 will be launched in SA later this year and while BMW are working on an M-version of the roadster, German tuning firm AC Schnitzer has unleashed a 220 kW supercharged version. Now we know who let this speedy shark out of its tank!
CARtoday.com last month quoted sources saying that BMW was developing an M-powered Z4 that would be significantly faster than any version of its predecessor, the Z3. A prototype M version of the Z4 was recently photographed in Europe and featured facia modifications and a redesigned front apron and rear bumper. It was expected to house the same 3,2-litre straight six and six-speed transmission that powers the 252 kW M3.
Even though a prototype of what appeared to be an M Power Z4 exists, BMW still has to decide whether it will build the model, something the marque has denied since the Z4’s unveiling at the Paris Motor Show.
In the meantime, the Schnitzer C30 is the closest thing to a hot version of the Z4. It is powered by a supercharged version of BMW’s three-litre inline six-cylinder engine. With a mild boost, power increases from 170 to 220 kW, while torque climbs by 73 N.m to 373 N.m.
C30 gets a short-throw six-speed sports gearbox for a snappier feel and the German tuner claims a zero to 100 km/h time 5,6 seconds and a top speed in excess of 250 km/h.
Suspension upgrades and a front strut brace firm up the ride and provide enhanced body control. Schnitzer also opts for 19-inch wheels, uprated brakes and a free-flowing stainless-steel exhaust system.
In addition, aerodynamic changes include a deeper front spoiler lip, small side sill air ducts and a rear spoiler to increase downforce at speed.
Shown to the South African public for the first time at last year’s Auto Africa motor show in Johannesburg, the Z4 promises tauter handling than its predecessor and features a chic and more spacious interior. As CARtoday.com has reported before, the Z4’s looks are controversial… Its combination of hard intersecting seams and rounded curves are meant to evoke lapping flames, but to some, the design looks ungainly.
Will the Z4 win over the South African public when it arrives on our shores? We will have to wait until its launch during the final quarter of the year to find out…
