Jenson Button briefly led the San Marino Grand Prix after starting from pole position, but the BAR Honda driver could not prevent Michael Schumacher from winning his fourth race in a row at Imola on Sunday.
The Briton made a lightning start and was in front until the first round of pit stops, but Ferrari’s reigning champion had an untroubled race to take the 74th grand prix victory of his career.
Button finished second, after he and Schumacher kept the rest of the field well behind them the entire race.
Juan-Pablo Montoya was finished third for Williams-BMW, but only after the Colombian had a heated battle with both Schumacher, and his brother Ralf, on the first lap.
Ralf spun after contact with Renault’s Fernando Alonso and finished seventh. Alonso was fourth – but the incident between the Spaniard and the Williams-BMW driver was to be investigated by FIA stewards after the race.
McLaren-Mercedes’ Kimi Raikkonen finished a grand prix for the first time in 2004 and secured one championship point in eighth.
