Studies have shown that few motorists regularly monitor their vehicles’ tyre pressures. Therefore, Goodyear is developing a tyre that would keep itself inflated without the use of external pumps. It is common knowledge that an underinflated tyre results in higher fuel consumption, excessive wear and reduced handling performance. Although few details on the functionality of this tyre – with the moniker air-management technology – have been disclosed, it is clear that the kinetic energy of the rolling tyre would be used to drive the small pump housed inside. No external connection (electronic or otherwise) or driver intervention would be needed to keep the tyre inflated. The introduction date is unknown and we have to wonder how the engineers will overcome the issues associated with slow punctures, wheel balance and precise pressure control.
