Jaguar recently unveiled the car that cult film character, Austin Powers, will be driving in the much-anticipated third installment of the popular comedy.
A Jaguar XK8, adorned with Union Jack-paintwork as previously seen on Powers’ E-Type in , took a bow at the New York International Auto Show.
Mike Myers, the actor who plays the “International Man of Mystery”, has become a superstar since the first Austin Powers movie gained cult status in the mid Nineties. Powers, a British spy from the swinging Sixties, has driven an E-Type since the first film. And for the second film, the red, white and blue E-Type also featured strongly in Madonna’s music video, , which was on the movie’s soundtrack.
The Jaguar E-Type, which is a cult car in its own right, was considered a stylish balance of adventure and sportiness in its heyday… or as Austin would say “groovy, baby… yeah”. And, to keep, um, abreast of the times, the producers of the third film have chosen the luxurious XK8 to be the International Man of Mystery’s “Shaguar”.
"The sensuous curves, powerful engine, and imposing stance of the XK8 make it the ideal mode of transportation for a character like Austin Powers," Sue Callaway, vice-president and general manager of Jaguar North America, said last week.
"We’re excited to be able to partner with a brand whose name carries such a distinctive image," said Lisa Balshan, senior vice-president, National Promotions, New Line Cinema. "We think this is a great partnership and look forward to future opportunities."
It’s been three years since Austin Powers has had to face his arch enemy, Dr Evil (also played by Myers). But after Dr Evil and his accomplice Mini-Me (Verne Troyer) escape from a maximum-security prison, Austin is called to action once more in his third and final instalment of the highly successful Austin Powers movie franchise.
Teaming up with the mysterious Goldmember, Dr Evil hatches a time-travelling scheme to take over the world, one that involves the kidnapping of Nigel Powers (Sir Michael Caine), Austin’s father and England’s most renowned spy. As he chases the villains through time, Austin visits 1975 and joins forces with his old flame, Foxxy Cleopatra (portrayed by singer Beyoncé Knowles of the multi-platinum R&B group Destiny’s Child). Together, Austin and Foxxy must find a way to save Nigel and stop Dr Evil and Goldmember from their mischievous mayhem.
Returning to the cast are Robert Wagner, Seth Green and Mindy Sterling. Austin Powers III is directed by Jay Roach and written by Mike Myers and Michael McCullers. The film is produced by Mike Myers, John Lyons, and Eric McLeod and should premiere in US theatres in July.
