This weekend’s Engen Volkswagen Cup action at Killarney saw Terry Moss Racing drivers Tschops Sipuka and Michael Stephen share the spoils to remain top of the championship standings.
Sipuka qualified on pole for Race One, and led from start to finish with very little challenge from team-mate Michael Stephen. The much-anticipated threat from Robert Briggs, who qualified in third on the grid, ended almost before it began when he clashed with the Brett Roach on the third lap.
That put both of them out of contention and allowed Stephen and Sipuka to pull away from the rest of the field and finish the race nine seconds ahead of the rest.
The biggest beneficiary of the Roach-Briggs incident was Curt Alchin. He fended off a late charge from Scott Bricknell and finished third in Race One.
Race Two was only slightly better with Stephen starting on pole and the rest of the field being closer than in the earlier race. He did a good job of staying ahead of Sipuka, who tried his best to get past in an effort to make a clean sweep of the day’s laurels. It was not to be as his team-mate steamed ahead to his first win of the season, with Sipuka finishing second.
This time, Roach and Briggs kept away from each other and both managed to finish in the points. Doing even better was Curt Alchin, who made sure that the Port Elizabeth contingent completely dominated the day’s proceedings with his second third-place finish of the day.
Roach, Briggs and Bricknell finished fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.
Mysteriously missing from the top of the pack were Graeme Nathan, Iain Pepper and Derick Irving. Usually very competitive, the Gauteng crew were forced to take the back seat to the Eastern Cape racers.
