Hide and seek
A German man found 10 kg of cocaine in a vehicle he bought from customs authorities.
reported that Rüdiger Nagel bought the Chevrolet Suburban after it had been shipped from Mexico to Germany. It had been confiscated in 1997 after authorities found 54 kg of cocaine in the petrol tank and spare tyre.
Nagel said he found the drugs that the authorities had missed when he took off a faulty door handle. Eleven packets of cocaine, wrapped in a Mexican newspaper dated from 1997, were stuffed into the handle.
He gave it to German customs, who admitted it had been overlooked. “After all, customs staff are only human, too,” said spokesman Robert Duetsch. The authorities checked the car once more before returning it to Nagel. “I promised them I’d call again if I found any more,” Nagel said.
Sofa causes crash?
An American woman caused a 24-vehicle accident after swerving her truck under a bridge to protect a sofa from getting wet in the rain.
reported that the woman in Atlanta was transporting the sofa when it started to rain. She spotted an bridge and decided to park there until the rain stopped.
But in her rush to get to there, she swerved across lanes, cutting off a number of cars. “She cut off two vehicles initially and that caused those two vehicles to collide with each other. We had a total of 24 vehicles at the end of it,” said a policeman.
Eight separate accidents were caused due to the woman’s actions. The woman’s truck was not hit. “She stayed at the scene and was charged with improper lane change,” said the policeman.
Car wash drama
A British couple say they are insulted after receiving R550 as compensation for being trapped in a faulty car wash that would not stop washing their car.
reported that Maggie and Alan White took their Mitsubishi to the car wash in Shropshire late one night. But the machine would not stop the cycle and washed, dried and waxed their car repeatedly.
The couple tried to shout for help and hit the hooter repeatedly, but staff did not hear them. Eventually they remembered they had a cellphone and called for help.
“I felt horrendous. I felt absolutely drained when I got out. I was beside myself with worry,” said Maggie White.
“We could have been in there forever. If I hadn’t had my mobile phone I don’t know what would have happened. The compensation I received was a total insult. They gave us the money for five car washes.”
The car wash owner apologised and blamed a malfunction. He has put up a sign giving a telephone number to call in case of emergency.
