Mbanjwa was travelling in his Jaguar on the N3 from Ladysmith to Pietermaritzburg a week ago, but a spokesman said he was rushing to help in an emergency. The department said Mbanjwa had received a call from a “traumatised” woman, who said she had just avoided a serious collision in the vicinity of the Ndezi River Bridge on the N3, as a result of cattle on the road.
“Dr Mbanjwa and the officers with him wanted to prevent another crash, which could have been fatal, from happening. At the time, a traffic officer was driving Dr Mbanjwa’s vehicle and Dr Mbanjwa was a passenger in the vehicle,” read a statement from the department.
But political groups told that Mbanjwa was setting a bad example. “It is shocking for the head of department responsible for all traffic regulations, to defy the very laws that come from his office.
“This is going to make the public wonder whether they are serious when they talk about zero tolerance,” IFP transport spokesperson Mzameni Mthiyane said.
“As the senior member of the transport department, his actions undermine the rule of law. Just as one of Gauteng MPs was charged and fined, Mbanjwa must also pay his fine,” said Democratic Alliance spokesperson Radley Keys.
