It’s been a few years since we last saw the Sprinter badge grace the paintwork of a Corolla, but in line with the recent facelift that sought to bring out the age-old saloon’s sportier qualities; Toyota South Africa Motors has brought back the once very popular Sprinter models.
Both new Corolla Sprinter models will be visually distinguishable thanks to exterior enhancements that draw inspiration from the original Sprinters, such as dark 16-inch alloys, front fog lights, a rear spoiler and chrome exhaust tailpipe. There’s also a new “Blue Metallic” exterior hue available exclusively to Sprinter owners.
The new Corolla Sprinter will be available with a choice of two petrol four-cylinder engines. Both the 1,6- and 2,0-litre unit boast 16-valves and dual intelligent variable valve timing (Dual VVT-i). The 1,6-litre motor produces 90 kW at 6 000 r/min and 154 N.m of torque at 5 200 r/min. The 2,0-litre powerplant develops 102 kW at 5 600 r/min and 189 N.m of torque at 4 400 r/min and comes with vehicle stability control as standard. Both models feature six-speed manual gearboxes.
The Sprinter interior is of the “Advanced specification”, which includes electric windows all-round, radio/CD with iPod input and Bluetooth connectivity, as well as satellite audio and Bluetooth controls for the steering wheel. ABS brakes and seven airbags are also standard. Sprinter specification also means that leather upholstery and alcantara inserts are included, as well as full automatic climate control and anti-smash side windows.
