Encouraged by the increase in sales of the Musso and Korando 4×4, SsangYong Motor Distributors intends expanding its model range in South Africa.
“The increase in sales follows the recent announcement that SsangYong has the full backing and support of the Imperial Group. Our customers feel reassured and confident about the future of the brand in this country,” said managing director Terry Gregory.
Another factor that has helped increase sales has been the introduction of face-lifted models as well as the appointment of new dealers in metropolitan areas.
“The new dealers have extended our sales and after-sales service and support network to the benefit of the growing number of SsangYong owners.
The company is looking at introducing the luxury Chairman Saloon, a double cab version of the popular Musso, and the Rexton. The Rexton, was shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show this year, but not launched. It is Ssangyong’s competitor to the Mercedes-Benz M Class and BMW X5.
The company hopes to introduce it by the end of next year, depending on when the right-hand drive version is available.
“The Rexton will not be a replacement for the Musso, it will be an extension to our product line. The positioning will be as a ‘flag-ship’ product for our SsangYong brand. The pricing will be around the R350 000,” said Ian Beales, SsangYong national marketing manager.
“This is truly an exciting vehicle with many innovative features and an extensive list of standard equipment, offering similar levels of luxury as the competition,” he said.
