Scheduled weekend talks between Numsa (National Union of Metalworkers of SA) and Ameo (Automobile Manufacturers Employers Organisation) have been postponed till Tuesday. But a Numsa spokesman said the strike action planned for next week would still go ahead.
Numsa and Ameo were supposed to have held talks with manufacturer chief executives on Saturday.
Dumisa Ntuli, Numsa’s national spokesman, on Monday told CARtoday.com that the meeting was rescheduled for Tuesday, July 20, to “give the union a chance to consult with its shop stewards”.
Ntuli pointed out that the demands had not changed and the mass action planned for July 26 would continue as scheduled.
The wage dispute remains deadlocked at the offered 6,5 per cent increase by manufacturers across the sectors – Numsa is demanding a nine per cent increase – and the rejection of the workers’ other demands.
About 21 000 workers are building up towards an indefinite strike action. The workers’ union’s demands include a three-year wage agreement, 100 per cent of maternity leave, training during working hours and ARVs and 30-days sick leave for HIV/AIDs sufferers.
