GAME REVIEW: SUPERSTARS V8
Racing Next Challenge
FOR PS3
PRICE R499
Much like last year’s Ferrari Formula 1 car, Superstars V8 racing was a bit of a failure and released to absolutely no fanfare and minimal sales.
So, have the developers of this game, Milestone, been successful at making the new installment – Superstars V8 Racing Next Challenge the real deal? I actually like it.
It may be a budget title, but I think that it is a solid racer and will appeal to racing fans who like to fidget with the suspension settings and follow the correct racing lines and take it seriously.
It may not be as polished as Forza in terms of variety or cater to both hardcore gamers and newbies like Grid does, but it does have a certain allure to true racing fans. The fundamentals are there.
The handling is excellent and provides good feedback, you can feel the shudder through your controller as you kiss a kerb or go over a bump on the track. It is also graphically quite impressive with a proper interior view and there’s a realism to the tracks and cars.
What I enjoyed most about this game is that it offers competitive racing. Your rivals don’t just sit behind you and only pass you when you make a mistake; they actually defend their line and try to make a move on you through the corners.
However this game does have its niggles. The menu navigation is slow, the online mode just doesn’t work and the game is too short. It’s not one of those games you want to play over and over again.
To sum up, even though Superstars V8 Racing Next Challenge has its pitfalls, I think it still offers an excellent racing experience (over a short period of time) and will definitely appeal to true racing fans.
Verdict 6/10 – Jesse Henny
