It’s one of the most diverse and competitive categories of our Top 12 competitions, and it shows… After the first day of voting, less than nine per cent separates the top five candidates in the best SUV category. Last year’s winner, the Toyota Land Cruiser, leads the field with 19 per cent of the vote, followed by newcomer BMW X5 (17), Mitsubishi Pajero (14), Audi Allroad (10) and the recently revamped Mercedes M-Class (10).
If the Land Cruiser stays ahead of its competitors, Toyota would hold the upper hand in five of the 12 categories. And if Toyota’s two Lexus models – in the best executive and grand saloon categories – stay in the positions they currently hold, the Japanese manufacturer would dominate seven of the categories. While the CAR editors’ choices of category winners might not necessarily follow the trends of our online voting, the results do indicate strong support for Japanese makes among our voters.
Meanwhile, the voting in the compact SUV and mini MPV categories seem to have settled into a pattern. The Toyota RAV4 and Condor have maintained their lead in these respective categories, although the Chrysler Voyager on Wednesday snatched second place from the VW Microbus in the Best MPV section. At the moment, the Renault Scénic leads the section by a slim two per cent, followed by the Voyager (28) and Microbus (27).
