Strikingly styled compact SUVs appear to be gaining a great deal of traction in the automotive realm of late, with the Range Rover Evoque providing solid proof that downsizing in this segment can yield successful results. Hot on the heels of Ford’s EcoSport, India’s Suzuki subsidiary Maruti-Suzuki has revealed the XA-Alpha concept.
A production version of the XA-Alpha is being considered for the Indian market and company insiders have admitted that while both the ageing Jimny and Vitara models are due for replacement, the XA will not fulfill that role. Should Suzuki see the merit in taking on Ford's EcoSport, there is a possiblity that such a model could find its way onto other emerging markets, and possibly even make its way to SA.
Measuring around 4 metres long, with a 2,5 metres wheelbase, and underpinned by an all-new platform, the XA-Alpha features a coupe-like profile that integrates a sweeping roofline, narrow glazing, prominent wheel arches and rear suicide doors. The frontal aspect is dominated by a sizeable five-slot grille flanked by narrow projector-style headlamps and a deep bumper featuring crescent-shaped daytime LED running lights. Size-wise the XA-Alpha sits neatly between the Jimny and the Grand Vitara.
The concept’s powertrain was not confirmed, but company representatives hinted that K-Series petrol and 1,3-litre DDIS diesel units were options. Both front- and all-wheel drive models are also possibilities, but company officials have hinted that the production version will be developed in such a way as to be more competent off-road than the already-capable Grand Vitara.
