The second-generation Suzuki Swift has just been launched in South Africa, and two specification levels are on offer.
Power is provided by a new 70 kW 1,4-litre petrol engine that claims to offer similar performance to the outgoing 1,5-litre unit, but with lower emissions and better economy. Suzuki claims a combined fuel consumption of 5,5-litres/100 km and a CO2 emissions figure of 132 g/km.
This engine is mated with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The manual version sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 10,9 seconds, while the auto gets there in 12,3 seconds.
Visually, the new Swift is similar to the model that it replaces and has blacked-out A- and B-pillars, angled headlamps, a wider body than the first-generation and a longer wheelbase.
The entry-level GL comes fitted with 15-inch steel wheels, steering wheel with height adjustment on the steering column, power steering, electric windows and side mirrors, remote central locking, air-conditioning, and an MP3-compatible CD player. Standard safety features include dual front airbags, Isofix anchorages, ABS with EBD and brake assist, an immobiliser and an alarm system.
The GLS package adds 16-inch alloys, foglamps, keyless entry and start-up, leather upholstery, rake and reach adjustment on the steering column, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, an MP3-compatible audio system with a USB socket, climate control, side and curtain airbags and larger disc brakes.
