Swimming sensation Natalie du Toit was handed an Opel Meriva recently as part of GMSA's four-year sponsorship agreement with the star.

Du Toit flew to Port Elizabeth, where she was handed the keys by GMSA's president and managing director, Robert Socia.

Socia said du Toit's determination and commitment had made her an icon for all South Africans to look up to and admire.

"By supplying her with a vehicle, we are aligning ourselves with a sportsperson that we all admire," Socia said.

Du Toit's Meriva is fitted with a 1,8-litre double overhead camshaft Ecotec engine with a five-speed transmission offering automatic or clutchless gearshifts.

Commenting on the three-way sponsorship between GMSA, Cape Town-based dealership The Thorp Group and Wesbank, du Toit said: "The Opel Meriva is a great car and I am excited to drive it. Most cars I have driven have a steering wheel that catches on my prosthetic leg. The Easytronic transmission system looks awesome and I cannot wait to get on the road."

Nicky Thorp, director of the Thorp Group, said that he viewed this as an opportunity to assist one of South Africa's rising stars.

"This sponsorship is more than just a vehicle. It is about helping Natalie to fulfil her dreams for herself and for South Africa."
