Three retired British tractor fanatics are planning a world record attempt to celebrate the tractor’s centenary by circumnavigating the globe – in their vintage tractors!
The retired trio, Terry Williams, John Smith and Chris Frampton plan to travel over five continents and 34 countries starting in May 2005 and hope to cover 160km a day. They estimate that the journey should take them about two years to complete.
Williams said: “No-one has travelled round the world in a tractor before, let alone in a vintage one. It is going to be an amazing journey but we know it will be tough.
“We will not be racing as we need to maintain a nice steady pace. There will be a lot of off-road driving on dirt tracks as tarmac roads are few and far between in some parts of Russia, China and India,” he added.
Last year Williams drove his 1953 Harry Ferguson TEF20 tractor, over 5 000km around the British coast in a successful Guinness world record bid.
Smith will set off in his Australian-built 1964 Chamberlain Super 90, while Frampton is rebuilding a 1964 Fordson Dexter for the challenge.
