A former KZN traffic clerk was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for fraud after she gave the answers to applicants writing learner’s licence exams.
A former KwaZulu-Natal traffic clerk was sentenced in the Durban Regional Court Magistrate this week to three years’ imprisonment for fraud after she gave the answers to applicants writing learner’s licence exams.
Noreen Desiree De Gee, a former employee of the Goble Road (Windsor Park) Road Traffic Inspectorate, confessed to receiving money to assist applicants to cheat in the learner’s licence exams. De Gee pleaded guilty to 15 counts of fraud. She said she gave those sitting the exam question books with the answers or filled them in herself. According to the charge sheet, she had acted in cahoots with driving school owners and instructors who charged between R250 and R450 for this.
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport S’bu Ndebele encouraged other judicial officers to follow the court’s example and said this type of sentence would send a loud and clear message to fraudsters.
The KwaZulu-Natal Transport Department said a case of fraud was being investigated at the Ixopo Municipality. The department said two applicants had been tested for an oral learner’s licence test at the centre in the KZN Midlands on the grounds that they had made a sworn statement to the effect that they could not read or write. It was later found out that both applicants had matriculated and one was actually a head of department at a school in Ixopo. Both applicants were also related to one of the learner’s licence examiners at Ixopo Municipality.
