So, your job involves being on the road most of the time and you have to work, eat, and sleep out of your vehicle? Well, Nissan has heeded the call and come up with the NV200 – a van that offers the convenience of a “mobile office and van in one unique package.”
The NV200 that was recently unveiled as part of Nissan’s display at the Tokyo Motor Show, has been specifically designed for the life style of marine biologist and underwater photographer Dr Alex Mustard. Dr Mustard’s lifestyle dmenads a van large and pracrical enough to store underwater cameras, scuba diving gear, computer equipment, mobile communication equipment, plus dry clothing. Nissan Design Studios Japan and Nissan Design UK have come together to fit the NV200 with everything than an oceanographer would need.
At a glance, you would be forgiven for mistaking it for just another van. The NV200’s grey non-scratch matt satin finished van was designed to resemble a toolbox, while the body features a cab-forward design, wraparound grille and rising side windows. Riding on a set of 20-inch alloy wheels, the NV200 has a wheelbase of 2820mm and stands 1840mm high.
The cargo space features a nifty sliding pod that can be accessed when the van is stationary. It has a number of divisions into which various pieces of diving and photographic equipment can be stored. There are sensors in the storage zones that will switch on various lights as soon as any movement is detected. According to Nissan “the pod is deployed manually with the aid of hydraulic rams, and sits securely on integrated drop-down legs when fully extended.”
When the pod is out, the van will transform into a mobile office and “home” with a desk folding down from the side. The pod is equipped with two LCD monitors, a laptop, a working light, room for hanging clothes, a drop down sink, a fridge and a first aid kit. The cabin comes equipped with contoured aluminium seats clad in washable fabric and an LCD monitor that links to a rear view camera.
The NV200 is equipped with what Nissan says is an environmentally-friendly “clean diesel engine.” Safety systems are based on Nissan’s Safety Shield Concept, which includes the aforementioned Back View Monitor and Distance Control Assist System.
