The South African National Roads Agency Ltd (SANRAL) said rates would be adjusted by a weighted average of 8,425 per cent. The adjustment is based on the annual average increase in the Consumer Price Index for the months of November 2001 to October 2002.
“Toll roads ensure the road user a smooth ride, which results in savings in the running costs of their vehicles, as well as time savings. Tolls ensure that funding is available much sooner for adding highway capacity at the right time, thereby relieving congestion, reducing losses in time and productivity,” said SANRAL.
Judith Annakie-Eriksen, marketing manager of the South African National Roads Agency, said the tariff rates depended on the distance travelled between gates. “The rate of about 25 to 26 cents per kilometre is used to work out the toll fees,” she said.
The rate at the Marianhill plaza on the N3 increases from R2,50 to R5, while the Machadodorp plaza on the N4 increases from R34,50 to 40,00. Some of the toll road tariffs have remained the same.
Toll fees for a trip between Johannesburg and Durban will now cost R133.
