Alwyn Martin has been appointed non-executive director at McCarthy Limited and Trevor Herbert franchise managing director of the group’s Land Rover and Volvo franchises.
Alwyn Martin has been appointed non-executive director at McCarthy Limited and Trevor Herbert franchise managing director of the group’s Land Rover and Volvo franchises.
Martin studied at the University of Cape Town and qualified as a chartered accountant in 1967. He was a founding partner of Christian Martin & Abrahamse Chartered Accountants, and spent 1985 to 1995 as a partner at Ernst & Young. In 1996 he assumed the chairmanship of the Vodacom Group.
From July 1997 to June 30 2003 he was the chief executive of Siemens Telecommunications. He currently serves on the boards of Santam, Trans Hex, FNB Corporate, Medi-Clinic Corporation, Credit Guarantee and SA Rugby.
Apart from his duties as franchise managing director, Trevor Herbert will also serve as dealership manager of McCarthy’s Durban Land Rover/Volvo operation.
Herbert matriculated from Selborne College in East London in 1980 and furthered his studies at Rhodes University while completing his Articles of Clerkship with Deloitte and Touche. He holds a B.Comm (Acc) degree and honours in Management Accounting. He spent seven years with the paper merchants group, Haddons-Star and First Paper House, holding various senior management positions.
He joined the McCarthy Group as financial director of Bonus Building Supplies in 1998, and within a year was promoted to the position of Managing Director. He was highly effective in leading Bonus Building Supplies under very challenging conditions. More recently, he held the position of group risk and project executive for McCarthy Limited. Herbert recently completed a strategic risk and business review across the entire McCarthy Group, and has also been responsible for the company’s McAuto project.
