Despite lingering supply chain issues and flood damages to their KZN production facility, Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) has still managed 64 000 vehicle sales over the first half of the year.
The Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) group which comprises Toyota, Lexus and Hino has celebrated a return to dominance in June after it achieved a market share of 18,1% with a total of 7 439 sales during the same month. That means that the Japanese conglomerate has managed a grand total of 64 001 sales since the beginning of the year and is currently the market leader with a 25,2% increase year-to-date.
Earlier on in the year, Toyota’s Prospection Plant in Kwa-Zulu Natal experienced severe flooding which resulted in damage and delays to models like the Hilux, Fortuner, Hiace, Corolla Quest and Corolla Cross. Little more than three months later, Toyota have seemingly turned their ill-fate around and returned to the top of the sales charts according to naamsa. The strongest contributors in the passenger segment over the month include:
- Toyota Urban Cruiser – 1 785 units
- Toyota Starlet – 1 574 units
- Toyota Rumion – 562 sales
In addition to this, luxury niche brand Lexus managed the monthly sales of the 17 ES models, 13 RX models and 10 IS models while TSAM’s truck division Hino sold a total of 228 vehicles in the same time.
Leon Theron: Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at TSAM stated “Our sales performance up till now proves that Toyota has an even firmer grip on its long-term position as the best-selling automotive brand in the country; it is particularly astounding that TSAM is still number One despite the cessation of production for popular vehicles such as Hilux, Hiace Ses’fikile, Corolla Quest, Corolla Cross and Fortuner.”
We can expect Toyota’s locally produced mainstay models to start filtering back into the sales charts in the coming months while the Prospection Plant returns to its former capacity and Toyota looks towards increasing the 64 000 vehicle sales number for the second half of the year.
