Toyota has used the Johannesburg International Motor Show to add three new editions to its Hilux range. The other vehicles to make up the Toyota stand include the FT-HS hybrid concept and the Yaris TS.

The updated Hilux range is now 18 derivatives-strong with the addition of two new diesels and a petrol model. The diesel pairing comprises the Hilux 3,0-litre D-4D Raised Body Raider A/T with a 4×2 drivetrain, and the Hilux 3,0-litre D-4D 4X4 Raider A/T. This is the first time that Toyota’s Double-cab line-up has become available with a choice of a four-speed automatic.
The new petrol model is a 4,0-litre litre V6 petrol Raised Body Double Cab Raider 4X2 with five-speed automatic transmission. These new models make use of Toyota’s latest generation 1KD-FTV diesel engine or the 4,0-litre petrol V6.
The 3,0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel unit has a claimed maximum output of 120 kW at 3 400 r/min and 343 N.m torque that is available from 1 400 r/min.
The extension of the Hilux range comes together with a minor face-lift and interior changes. The front bumper has received a new treatment as well as the radiator grille. The headlight styling has been revised and wheel size on Souble Cab Raider mosled has grown to 16 inches.
Other changes include leather covers for the steering wheel and gear lever and Cruise Control for the 3,0-litre D-4D Raider models, as well as in the 4,0-litre V6 models. Double Cab Raiders also gain a multi-information display.
The Toyota FT-HS hybrid concept made its international debut at last year’s Genenva Motor Show and has now fond its way to Johannesburg.
According to Toyota, this concept has been designed to show “Toyota’s advanced Hybrid Synergy Drive technology can be used to offer a powerful and exciting driving experience together with outstanding environmental footprint”. Toyota is aiming for this vehicle to complete the zero to 100 km/h sprint in the four-second range.
This vehicle has a front engine, rear wheel drive configuration and plays host to a 3,5-litre V6 petrol engine coupled with a sports hybrid system. Toyota has 300 kW as the maximum output target for this powertrain.
Toyota describes the FT-HS as a four-seat sports coupe. This vehicle has a retractable roof that is made of carbon fibre Kevlar. Toyota explains that the roof panel and back window pivot in a downward motion to stow the rear seat space. This configures the concept into a two-seater. Toyota claims that it takes ten seconds to drop the top of the FT-HS.
The new flagship Yaris is powered by an all-new 1,8 litre Dual VVTi petrol engine that mated with a six-speed manual transmission. The TS will go on sale at the end of the year, and sources say that it will have a price tag of between R180 000 and R190 000.
