It seems that, in a couple of years' time, all BMW’s M cars will be equipped with turbocharged engines. The latest evidence of this trend is rumours that suggest the next M3 could offer a six-cylinder petrol engine with three turbos. The last time a six-cylinder unit was used in an M3 was in the previous-generation E46, although it was a naturally aspirated unit.
As we have seen with the 1 Series M Coupé, BMW M GmbH still knows how to inject the necessary credentials into an M car, even if it uses a turbocharged engine.
Also, even if the increase in power isn’t that much higher compared to the current E92 M3, expect the new car to weigh less due the use of more carbon-fibre parts and lightweight materials.
