CAR is hosting an information session in Cape Town next month for readers who are interested in technical aspects of motoring. CAR’s technical editor Jake Venter and various experts will make presentations at the event.
“CAR magazine does not have the editorial space to answer all the technical questions received from the public,” Venter – who is the South African representative the International Engine of the Year judging panel – said on Wednesday.
“That’s why we have organised an information day on Saturday May 14 at the Ramsay, Son & Parker (CAR’s publishing house) conference room in Uitvlugt, 3 Howard Drive in Pinelands. It will cater for regular readers of Technimail and technical/DIY articles who’d like to know more. And although discussions will be of a technical nature, the session will be informative to anyone interested in how cars work”.
There will be speakers from a major oil company as well as a leading tyre group. Issues such as what kind of oils to use (synthetic versus mineral), how your car will be affected by new fuel legislation, whether fuel economy can be improved by using bigger tyres, and if it is best to always use the recommended tyres for your vehicle, will be discussed, said Venter. There will be an opportunity for attendees to ask questions.
“An expert on electronics will tell you all the things that you are no longer allowed to do on a modern car because of the danger of wrecking the onboard computer or catalyst,” added Venter, who will deliver talks on subjects including “think like an engineer”, engine balancing, power and torque, the theory of roadholding, and CAR’s road testing procedure.
In addition, anything that crops up in “Questions and Answers” could be discussed in greater detail. It costs R300 to attend the session, which includes refreshments, lunch and a year’s subscription – or a renewal – to CAR. Phone Jake Venter at 021 530 3147 for bookings and more details.
