Jordan’s Giancarlo Fisichella has been named the winner of the Brazilian Grand Prix after the race was reviewed by the FIA on Friday because of a time discrepancy.
Kimi Raikkonen has been dropped to second. This is Fisichella’s first victory and a fourth for Jordan. Fernando Alonso is still in third place.
Raikkonen was named the victor after the race was stopped on lap 55 because of an accident involving Fernando Alonso. Though Fisichella was leading at the time, according to the rules, the car that was leading two laps before the lap on which the race was stopped would be named the winner. But the FIA discovered that Fisichella had already started the 56th lap.
The problem was caused by a timing screen mistake that first stated Fisichella had completed 55 laps, but this then disappeared and reappeared saying he was still on lap 55.
According to the website, the FIA is looking at the rule. “The rule is under review, but care should be taken to ensure any change covers every imaginable scenario and doesn’t make things worse in some cases,” a source told the website.
