The Retail Motor Industry organisation and Fuel Retailers Association will reportedly sign a wage deal on Thursday that could avert a strike in the motor industry.
CARtoday.com reported on Wednesday that the parties met on Monday after wage talks failed earlier this year. Numsa spokesman Dumisa Ntuli said earlier this month the industry faced the prospect of a “massive” strike from September 1, involving about 60 000 workers.
The union said it wanted an increase of five per cent above the May consumer price index of 7,7 per cent. It also wanted the wages of workers to be backdated to the date of the signing of the collective agreement.
Ntuli said he could not give details of the final wage offer until he had informed all Numsa’s members. “The union will only divulge the details of the proposals at the end of the week after all workers in the sector are fully consulted.”
But Ntuli said the meeting with the employers was “impressive and constructive”. “We believe the employers came to the talks with a different mindset aimed at taking the process forward”.
